Cutting the plastic spacer at the top makes it easier to insert the filter intake tube (quickly learn not to cover the very end of the intake tube). On the first day we cleared the tube of dirt several times. However, on the second day we found out that the fish and snails do the cleaning for us! Now I just stir the water around the substrate every few days. Small particles rise into the water, are caught by the filter fabric and cleaned by the pool residents. Works perfectly! In the meantime, my young fish and small snails are protected!
