Review on John Boos 18X18 Maple Butcher Block W/Knife Holder & Casters, Black Legs (PCA1) by Tyler Cash

Beautiful, classy piece, also heavy

This is a beautiful, top-quality piece and definitely makes my kitchen look a couple steps up. If you like beautifully finished chunks of wood, this is for you. I'm not going to use it for cutting, I needed more counter space and this fits the bill perfectly. I left the knife holder off, the two pre-drilled holes for it are small and barely noticeable. I didn't pay attention to the weight when I ordered, and I had it delivered to work. Be aware everyone - it's about 140 lbs. in the package! I had to take the package apart in the garage, and the wood pieces are covered in light oil, but luckily I had brought a thick sheet. Even so it was a struggle for me to get it home, into my kitchen and to stand it up by myself. But looking at it now I'd say it's worth it! One other bit of advice for newbies - you'll need a mallet to easily hammer the legs into the top. You'll think the legs are too big to fit the holes after you put the (included) chips in to widen them, but they will fit.

Pros
  • This piece is beautiful and very well done. I love it.
Cons
  • The knife holder may not be large enough to accommodate a full set of knives
