Bought a brand new Whirlpool French Door refrigerator with water and ice maker. Lowe suggested this special waterline. After running a ton of water through a filter and doing a (blind) taste test straight from the tap, fridge water, filtered fridge water, and filtered tap water, we knew that the culprit was the water in the fridge. Changed filter didn't help. Replaced the plumbing and the bad taste was gone. This may not be for everyone as mineral levels and reactions in water vary, but it was definitely the reason our water tasted bad.
