I had never seen a commercially made leather belt before so I decided to give it a try. At first it was impossible to charge with the attached connection. Others have mentioned some kind of instructions, but I couldn't find them in my box or on the internet. I tried opening up the leather with mineral oil and it helped a bit, but I had two problems: the paint was peeling off the leather and I still couldn't evenly fill the lines with compound (including the ones I already had). ). I tend to have sticky tape on the surface rather than a smooth layer. Some have mentioned softening the compound with heat, but you shouldn't. In the end I decided to repaint the line myself. My belt sander was taking an unrealistically long time - even after a full minute on a 120 belt I was experiencing significant ups and downs. The attached picture shows the sling after about 90 seconds of looping. There is still a HUGE tear in the leather where the compound will not load. Another 30 seconds or so and I FINALLY had a flat line with a perfect surface. That's a lot more work than I should have done for the money. However, I am giving it three stars because the base is strong and the leather is tight, which shows in how it stands up to being sanded with a belt. Now that the horrible finish has been removed and the bumps and valleys smoothed out I have a great line.
