. Our thermostat is on 55 while we work and sleep. Needless to say, our cat is always looking for warm places in winter, such as . We just received this bed yesterday and she already loves it! The heater is activated by the cat's weight, so before introducing it to it, I put a couple of throw pillows on it for about half an hour to make it instantly warm to the touch. I put her in, she started purring and kneading, and then she curled up and fell asleep. She spent most of today in bed, either sleeping or looking out the window. I'm so glad I bought it for her. I was concerned about a cat bed with heating pads as cats tend to wrinkle their bedding. However, the foam surrounding the heater is very thick and my cat kneads with no problem. Some reviewers complained that the bed isn't very warm, but it shouldn't be hot like a regular heating pad. It only heats up when a cat is in it. You can test this by placing a heavy pillow on top for half an hour and then putting your hand under the pillow. If your heating element is working properly, you will feel a mild warmth. Another tip: if you have a very large cat (e.g. a Maine Coon) or if you want a bunch of kittens to snuggle up together, go for the larger version. The 16 inch version is perfect for my small cat and I think it is perfect for a medium sized cat but very tight for a large cat or more than one cat. UPDATE November 24, 2012: We've had this bed for a year now and it remains our cat's favorite spot. We thought we would only use it in winter, but we didn't have the heart to turn it off. She enjoyed the bed all year round. (Luckily the cover washes really well!)
