. They were purchased to provide mounting threads for 3D printed parts. I made the hole in the printed part slightly larger than the smaller insert cylinder. Basically to allow the insert to partially slide into the hole in the plastic, up to a larger insert diameter. I found a tip for my soldering iron and put the bit on it. When hot, the inert slipped into a hole in the plastic. My first try was perfect because I did the same thing with machined plastic parts. It was probably an accident! You may need to make a practice piece with multiple holes of different diameters as a practice piece.
