Filter Tips - Don't Throw Them Away!

Couldn't find this at the local pet store and it was cheaper online. Works as it should. A note for fish owners: you really shouldn't throw them out every few weeks like the packaging suggests, unless you're specifically using charcoal to get medicine out of the water. Complete replacement of these filters can actually be BAD for your aquarium as beneficial toxin-scavenging organisms grow on the filters and naturally break down toxic fish waste into less harmful by-products. If you get rid of these beneficial organisms by removing the filter material they live in, you could destroy your aquarium's ability to naturally break down the deadly ammonia in your fish's feces. The carbon in the filter replacement is not a substitute for a healthy bioburden, and even with regular water changes, your tank's water chemistry can become unstable and dangerous to your fish. (See the Aquarium Nitrogen Cycle section for more info, or just browse through any reviews that talk about how their fish got sick or died after replacing all their filters at once.) Cut into that instead Filter media , remove the carbon, then every few weeks wash off the accumulated dirt with NON-CHLORINATED water (you can use the water you siphon from the aquarium when you change the water). You can use these filters until the actual filter material begins to wear out and break. Not only will you have a healthier aquarium, but you'll also spend less money on replacement filters!
