Great ultra wide angle lens with some limitations

I was looking for an amazing ultra wide angle lens for video work with gimbal stabilization. I have a Zhiyun Weebill Lab which can handle a decent weight but is a bit limited in the balance room for heavy front cameras. My choice for Cinema EOS and adapted GH cameras was my Tokina 11-20mm for APSC. With acceleration on the GH5, this lens is too heavy. So I tested three native MFT mount ultra wide lenses to replace them for IS work and used Tokina as a benchmark to compare them all. Overall, the Tokina is hard to beat, but Olympus comes very close in terms of features. There are fluctuations in the weight, the rigidity of the zoom ring and the adaptability of the front filter. The optics are certainly not the best of the MFT ultra wide-angle zooms I tested. It's the heaviest of the bunch, though, making the benefits over the Tokina negligible, but enough to avoid the need for counterweights. In addition, this lens is inconvenient for shooting in bright environments if you do not want to increase the shutter speed. You will need a filter adapter as the front element sticks out too far on standard threaded filters. This lens is great for indoor and nighttime shots with the GH5S, but it's not entirely suited to outdoor gimbal work as the goal isn't to add more material at the front to compensate. And finally the zoom ring. If rotating the camera on the gimbal can cause the camera to rotate 90 degrees sideways, it is too narrow to walk and take pictures with the gimbal. With this you can easily reset the horizon calibration. To adjust the zoom without moving the rotation axis, you need to lower the gimbal and then hold the camera body while rotating the zoom ring. In any case, this is not the best solution. I returned the lens with a heavy heart. I wanted it to work, but in the end it was more profitable to just add counterweights and go with an adjusted Tokina 11-20. If it weren't for 2 of the 3 problems listed above, it would be a keeper.

Pros
  • Ideal for a small home
Cons
  • Bad experience
