I'm new to the hobby and this worked for me. Using this, a liquid ammonia test kit and Tetra SafeStar Plus, I was able to get a new 8 gallon tank up and running in about 16 days. I would recommend dosing a little less than recommended and then checking the ammonia levels. When dosing, keep in mind that a lot of substrate or decorative items take up water space. For example, my 8 gallon aquarium actually holds about 6.5 gallons of water after adding substrate and hardscape. So I dosed at 6.5 gallons (not 8). It was about a week before I noticed any nitrites. Then a few more days until the positive nitrate test. By day 16, my ammonia was near zero. I dosed the initial amount of ammonia to bring it up to 3 parts per million and after 24 hours it was back to almost zero. Then you know that the bacteria are functioning well and your aquarium is running.
