UPDATE June 2020: I've had this filter for 2 years and 2 months. what is below. But also with my (same) sea turtle, which is quite big and dirty, it was GREAT. It can take months between filter cleanings. Ideally it seems to be every 3-4, but I usually finish this about every 5-6 months as cleaning takes some effort and I feel a lot of pain bending over the tub to close the media for an hour or so clean and hoses and prepare everything with a brush. It probably would have been easier to shorten the hoses so they weren't so long so they were less to clean, but I didn't. I wouldn't recommend waiting 5-6 months as consumption goes towards zero and I assume it's not good for the engine? But surprisingly, even with a reduced flow, the water is still quite clear. NOW is the best way I've found to fill it up! It was disgusting because sometimes you have dirty aquarium water in your mouth etc. Sometimes you have to do this several times with dirty water because refilling doesn't work etc. We've all been in it I'm sure. So I found the most reliable way: prepare the filter for connection, but DO NOT connect it yet. Clean the water filter. Place the suction tube in the aquarium so that it stays. but prepare it for a quick reattachment. Suction the outlet hose to allow it to suck by gravity (through the inlet hose and into the empty filter). Since the filter holds quite a lot of water, this takes a few seconds. Long enough to quickly put the spray wand back into the water and connect the filter once the water enters the drain hose. EASY! Works every time and the hose you suck is always clean and hasn't been in the dirty water yet. Original Review: I've been using this filter for 5 months now and it's great for a very dirty sea turtle! I just cleaned it for the first time last month (4 months without cleaning) because I missed the time and the water stayed sooooo clean until the end when the water flow slowed down and the suction didn't work. (because of course it was full of shit!). Compare this to the weekly rinsing of traditional aquarium filters and they don't keep the aquarium nearly as clean. As I said, be sure to check out the youtube video for assembly and priming, otherwise I wouldn't understand it. A small price to pay for a totally silent filter with amazing cleaning power. You should buy carbon filters and possibly white thread filters so that the first time you clean them you don't forget and realize that just having good clean filters is better than trying to flush existing ones. (me). The heavy duty blue filter easily withstands rinsing but I bought a spare pair probably after 1 year or more who knows. Finally, you should buy a long flexible hose cleaner, such as: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CJ4NW7H/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 It is very difficult to get the nasty stuff out of the green pipe to remove by simply pouring water into it because the pipe is so long. It's all over now. Great filter, great price. It would be surprising for fish because they are not as dirty as turtles.
