Review on ☕ Kalita Silver Stainless Steel Wave 155 Coffee Dripper - Optimal Size for Perfect Brewing by Cathy Sharp

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great coffee but the capacity is smaller than I expected.

I bought this dripper as part of my endless search for the perfect cup of coffee to take home. I tried almost every method: electric dripper (Technivorm), different models of siphons, electric moka from Krups, French Press, Clever Dripper and AeroPress and many others. In recent years my winner has been the Hario V60-02 Ceramic. I've read that the Kalita's flat bottom gives more consistent results than the V60. I was hoping for less babysitting pouring. Most reviews indicated that the 155 was actually the correct Kalita shaft size for my 12 oz coffee cup with 8 oz beans, so I got it. Any thought that it would be easier flew out the window when I saw this thing. He's tiny. Really tiny. It's about the size of a Victorian teacup or slightly larger than an espresso cup. Tiny. Really tiny. After filling with a filter and 24 g of coffee, there is very little space for water, so even with the pulse method it is better not to be distracted for more than 10-15 seconds. I refill the dripper about every 50g then the thick stock floats over the top of the filter. Not over the edge, but in the middle of the bottom, like muffins. How are the results? I am satisfied with the coffee received. I would say it's really more stable than the V60-02 and the coffee is MUCH hotter. So does my mug, into which I brew directly. Actually, I have to let the coffee cool down for a few minutes. I think I would be much happier with 185. However, it's not much larger judging by the size of the filters Revain submitted in error. They are slightly larger at the bottom and maybe 1/2-3/4 inch taller. However, I've found that the sides of the 185 slope a little more than the 155, so there might be a little more room. UPDATE: I had a BIG idea to solve the capacity problem - brew a smaller cup. It's amazing, but only 20g instead of 24g made all the difference, and 300g of brewed coffee is really a lot if you brew it heavily. It's easy to maintain. the water level does not overflow even with very fresh coffee at only 20g, makes an excellent cup and is very stable.

Pros
  • Very good value for money
Cons
  • Infinitely slow
