For the price it works. This is a bit deceptive as there are no bristles like a regular brush. Your hair should be fully combed before use and I suspect that if you have more hair texture than me it might be a little confused. I have naturally wavy/curly hair that gets frizzy when combed, so it's a bit tangled. The fewer pieces I made, the less this happened. However, time is valuable to me, so I'd rather not do it. The lack of bristles allows for the use of a protective shield over the heating element which I think makes it very unlikely that you will burn yourself. I never felt hot and never used a glove. The entire unit also didn't get hot like most straighteners, which was nice, I didn't sweat or miss the point of straightening my hair. There was a slight plastic smell when you first turned it on, but that dissipated fairly quickly.
