My poor husband has used three other tank heaters. The first heater I tried was the one recommended by the manufacturer for use with this tank and it was just useless for heating the tank and the wall adapter got so hot it made me nervous. The next two couldn't handle the 63 degree space on their own, so I put them both in the tank at the same time. It was cramped and unsightly in there, and I don't think he enjoyed sharing his 4-gallon tank with all that wiring and stuff. As for this heater, it's small enough to be hidden behind a tall plant and is VERY consistent even with fairly large fluctuations in room temperature once you adjust the actual water temperature to the adjustable controller. I find setting the controller a few degrees below where I want the tank to be works well for me. My tank is small for what this heater can do, but that's fine as I'm hoping to get a bigger tank if I can find space. it's pretty lame for the glass. The cord to the heater is quite thick and it was easy to accidentally pull the heater away from the wall when removing the lid to change some water. I don't like sticking my hand in the tank to reposition the heater almost every time I open the lid. Finally, others find the cable from the regulator to the plug uncomfortably short, but I connected it to the surge protection bar behind the tank and I like the length. He keeps the controller next to the surge protector where I can keep an eye on it.
