I hated this gate at first when I tried to install it. I thought mine was bent as some people have mentioned in the comments because the latch was misaligned. Thank God for my husband for pointing out what now seems obvious: This is the Gate of Tension. The latch/lock doesn't meet the other side until you mount it on the wall and tighten the ends. It was a battle that took both of us - once the bottom was fully set he pulled the top carbide rods towards the center towards the latch until they met and he locked while I pulled the latch all the way out. to hit our wall and then tighten the nut. It was definitely a good effort for both of us, but we prevailed in the end. Now I really like those goals. What to pay attention to: 1. The middle part of the grille is made of plastic, not metal. I can't say for sure, but for some reason I was surprised at first.2. The latch will not align until you apply voltage.3. If you have a climber, they can stick their little fingers and toes in the trellis piece and scale it if they're really determined. Our youngest climbed about half way before she was caught and I have no doubt she can/will climb it fully in the future. I wouldn't suggest this for the top of the stairs just because of that.
