UPDATE: Took the DIY commenter's advice and wrapped and taped the material onto a tennis ball can. I can't take the decorated tree off the stand to install the updated version, but I'm ready for next year! Do this BEFORE placing the tree on the stand. (originally) I was hoping it would be more self-supporting, but I had to build a thin trunk before I could cut and wrap the tree's bark around it. Not an easy process, but it looks better than it was.
