Review on ๐Ÿ’ง Fleck 64K Water Softener Grains: Highly Efficient Solution for Crystal Clear Water by Chris Cruz

Great product - long time to buy!

Installing your own water softener is not for the faint of heart. I have to admit I was intimidated by the cost and complexity and put off replacing my old water softener for much longer than I should have. Pentair's Fleck 5600SXT is the Toyota Camry of water softener controls - it's popular because it's economical and it works. Two questions remained: Is the water softener a do-it-yourself project that I can make? First a little background - we live in Northern California and use well water. The water is hard, with a high content of iron and hydrogen sulfide. the pH of the water is ok. Our old system used a calcite filter and water softener, but they were old and inefficient. I received 3 offers from professional installers: $3900, $5600 and $8400. Proliferation was a red flag. So I went to the analysis laboratory and was given great advice. First, I was told that my well is unlikely to be very different from my neighbors' wells, so don't do anything weird. Second, iron and hydrogen sulfide are symptoms of infection by two symbiotic bacteria. The first advice is: buy a regular filter plus a softener. The second is to regularly spray your fountain with chlorine. So I chlorinated my fountain liberally and 6 hours later turned on the sprinklers to get the chlorine smell out of the water. This has greatly improved the quality of the water going into my filters. Bib water from the garden hose no longer smells like rotten eggs. This also reduces the amount of filtration that the filter softener has to perform. I plan to pump my well regularly. Next I decided on this softener and an air injection filter injection+iron+sulphur+and+manganese+removal Installation wasn't exactly easy, but you can always use a plumber's help. I decided to do the work myself and after some trial and error it was done. I recommend using Sharkbite fittings as follows: https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=sharkbite+female+adapter++1+inch&rh=i% 3Aaps %2Ck %3Asharkbite+female+adapter++1+inch and https://www.amazon.com/SharkBite-U260LFA-Plumbing-Connector-Fittings/dp/B0031118WO/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1538582278&sr=8 -3&keywords= Sharkbite+1+inch+elbowNarrow space Copper tubing cutter like this one: https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=node%3D3741181&field-keywords=1+inch+tubing+ Cutter&rh=n %3A2619525011% 2Cn %3A3741181%2Ck%3A1+inch+pipe+cutter&ajr=2 helped a lot to cut everything to size. The instructions that came with this fabric softener are not very good. However, the provider has excellent technical support, live staff answer calls. I recommend googling and downloading the Fleck 5600SXT controller installation guide directly from the Pentair manufacturer. You will find some helpful third-party installation guides, but Pentair's guide is the best in my opinion. After installation I had a small problem - the check valve at the bottom of my brine tank let water through but blocked the brine flow. It has a small ball float that should open when there is brine in the tank and close after it is completely drained. The little ball is stuck. I removed the brine line from the controller. Sucking on the pipe confirmed that the valve was sticking. Blowing air down the tube released the bullet. I reconnected everything and now everything works great. I am delighted with this water softener and the iron and sulfur filtration system with air injection. My only regret is that I should have installed this many years ago! Now that my water is soft and iron-free, I need to figure out how to remove old scale and iron rings from toilets, sinks, and bathtubs.
