It's a bit long. The bottom line is this: I think it depends on the cat, but all three of my cats have experienced a dramatic reduction in anxiety. It won't solve all of your problems or change the cat's whole temperament, but at least in my house, all three cats are much calmer, sleep better, are kinder to me, and unnoticeable aggression from a trip to the vet goes away much faster with spray than without. Read the rest if you like lengthy cat lady stories with details. Or if you're trying to integrate or re-integrate cats and it's 3 am you have to get up for work in two or three hours but can't sleep because of the meowing and scratching at the door and everything you can think of It's about you being scared to leave your angry cats alone while you are at work and you feel like this whole hard process will never end and you are in dire need of moral support because you can't say whether it's after four days of this madness, is it a real meow you hear, or is it all just in your head now, and maybe you've never had cats, maybe you're in an animal shelter somewhere, and it's just awful fever dream 'Cause that was me last night, friend. I was there. I have three cats - two four year olds from the same litter I have had since they were weaned and a former homeless cat who is around ten years old. I had a former homeless guy for five or six years. All sterilized females. The older cat and the louder of the two younger cats have never had the best relationship as the younger cat gets too attached to the older one and they both want to be dominant. The younger exuberant spent two nights at the vet last week and returned home with a different smell and behavior so it's no surprise I'm dealing with an aggression or misjudgment. I tried to get them all together (at first it seemed to work but the eldest was very afraid of something unknown and had to separate them) and now they are in different parts of the apartment, separated but with their own food on either side of the door to my bedroom. Vet smells/other smells don't seem to be a problem anymore as the older cat (which is way meaner) can smell the younger one on me or near the door, or they can hear her meowing and it just doesn't matter . I've done the towel and vanilla trick and nobody seems to care about smells anymore. Only when the older cat sees the younger one does it get really angry and start hissing and growling and sometimes howling. What I do is you open the door an inch or so while they're eating and give them their favorite treats when they can see each other to reinforce the positive. It doesn't seem to be progressing that much but I might be biased as I haven't really slept the last few nights because when I'm with the older cat the younger ones cry and want me to go back to them. their page. When I approach them, the older cat cries until I come back to her. Not my favorite week. I live in an apartment and don't want to drive the neighbors crazy with constant meowing, so I even went so far as to sleep in the hallway by my bedroom door so I can easily switch rooms and try to calm whoever is there crying, singing tender words over them, songs and whispering to them. They love it, so sometimes they cry a little quieter or scratch less so I don't have to go back and forth as often. I'm trying to rationalize here, but obviously cat people like me are crazy enough to do this shit. There really is no excuse. We've gone insane. I asked a few of my friends (all of them have multiple cat families) what I could do that I haven't tried yet. Some offered a soothing spray that I shrugged off snake oil when I first saw it. "How gullible do you have to be to buy THAT," I thought. But friends I trusted who are parents to very nervous cats swear by it, and I figured I had nothing to lose but ten bucks. I'm desperate and want to speed up this process. I love my cats very much, but this reintegration requires a lot of effort from me. Singing them songs is crazy enough, but sleeping on the floor in the hallway while they climb me like a mountain and yell at me at the top of their lungs is not what I imagined my adult life to be. Help. Today I had a friend who bought a spray on the way home and left it. First I sprayed it around two younger cats. It could have been his imagination, but the noisy boy seemed a little sleepy. Not like she was sedated, for she was still alert and responsive as usual, but seemed a lot less irritable. Even if it was maybe my imagination. Another younger one, whom I didn't mention because she wasn't involved in the conflict, suddenly became very alert, her tail was swollen and she started circling. It wasn't that anything was wrong or that she was scared, it was just that she was really, really excited. It's like I'm back home after a long weekend and it's time to catch up on hugs and treats. But it could also be coincidence or imagination. It was around 5:00 p.m. today. Once I was sure the younger cats weren't going to die or have any weird reactions to the spray, I moved to the quarantine area in the back where the older cat is. I squirted it all over the place while she yelled at me to really just get rid of the other cats. Nothing seemed to happen. Then she calmed down like an angry cat. So I decided to open the door an inch or two so they could see each other while I gave them the treat. The older cat hissed and grunted a little, but not as much as before. The younger cats tried to attack the door, missing their grumpy friend, but instead they just sat and stared, but not as menacingly as the cats. Just calm and enjoy watching. The older cat also sat spellbound. Eventually everyone got bored and left. I went ahead and closed the door, though amazed at the change. I decided these changes couldn't be accidental. The calming spray had to do something, and in order for it to work on all three of my cats, it had to be made by a very talented magician and then blessed by a shaman before it made it to the Revain warehouse. Or maybe they have shamans in their house, I don't know. All three cats were themselves all evening, but much more relaxed. The younger ones have been napping on the couch next to me while I watched horrible TV, and I haven't seen them sleep that well in weeks. They were so relaxed, but when I woke them up to make sure they were ok, they were themselves. It's not that they were infatuated, it's just that they sympathized with me and everything around them around trusted. I came to see the old cat getting fucked around 10:30pm. I heard her meow softly when she was feeling lonely, but nothing compared to the manic, excited crying and scratching at the door she's been doing when I've been away from her for the past few days. When I walked in she wasn't flustered, flustered or grumbling at all. She was excited to see me and twittered quite a bit, running around like she was young and snuggling up to me like she had never snuggled up to me before. Then she just fell asleep, and even if there's a noise or something outside, she looks up just enough to make sure it's not a very interesting bird or something, and just goes back to sleep. And that is a happy, restful dream. In summary, I'm still not ready to put all cats in the same room, but I have a feeling this will happen much sooner than without the spray. Everyone has really gotten softer in their individual areas and I no longer have to run back and forth when the other gets lonely. They're still on their own, awake, and have the same personalities, but they all seem much happier, less stressed, and better able to get a good night's sleep. So I will too. My grumpy older cat is still grumbling and will continue to grumble, the exuberant younger cat talked to me a lot between deep sleeps tonight and kept letting me scratch my head, and the already calm younger cat who was clearly nervous about the Situation between the two, the other itself is still calm, but much more relaxed. So this stuff didn't change everything or fix the whole situation, but I love how much more content each has and will continue to use it even after the rejoin is complete. I'm so glad I tried it and all three of my cats responded great to it. The best thing is that I can finally sleep tonight and not have to worry about my cats howling in their rooms while I'm at work tomorrow. It's good. To attempt. It may not work on your cat, but I have three out of three. Oh and as everyone has said it has a faint floral/spa scent which didn't bother me even though I was having a rough day due to a pollen allergy. I smelled it briefly and faintly when I sprayed it on, but as it dried the smell went away. So that's another plus. To attempt. If it doesn't work for your cat, give it to a friend who has cats and tell them to buy you lunch if it works.
