Air shows - everything that needs a good range

Yes, this lens is big, but for a 300mm lens it's not too heavy. And it's self-contained - the focus moves internally, so the length doesn't change. Can be used as a handheld for wildlife, sporting events, air shows and anywhere good range is required. (Although I'd bring a tripod/monopod if I manage to use one!) But for the added benefit to the photographer in these situations, it's also fast (f4) and a fast, almost silent, built-in auto mode. - Focus Motor Images are sharp even wide open, and the best setting is f5.6, which is still pretty fast. Extremely sharp across the entire aperture range, close-ups will show some diffraction when used at f22 or faster, but even then your images will be useful most of the time. The only problem I had is focusing in low light when the aperture is wide open. In most situations this should not be a problem. I bought it to replace the DA 55-300 which was pretty disappointing at the long end of its range - it's an upgrade in every way and a great compromise between long range (450mm) and weight.

Pros
  • Weatherproof and dustproof housing
Cons
  • Expensive
