Review on CanaKit Raspberry Pi 3 B+ Ultimate Starter Kit (32 GB Edition) with Clear Case: Everything You Need to Get Started by Troy Henkhaus

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Very bad experience.

Update: Below I've written about how 4 of the 8 Pi kits we bought failed. I contacted Canakit and they said they would either trade them in for the Pi 3B+ or if we prefer the Pi 3B instead. That's a great (and unexpected) move on their part, which is why I'm bumping this review. As I said in the original review below, we've never had an issue with Canakit's Pi, so I'm guessing it could just be bad luck. I bought 8 of these for classroom use. On day one, one of the IPs refused to boot out of the box. The green light would never flash as if no SD card was (was) inserted. Luckily I had some spare PIs and let the student use them (same SD card booted with same power supply and everything worked fine). The next day the same thing happened to another student. On the 5th day of class it happened to two other students. I had to run to the local micro center to buy more PI. So out of 4 dead PIs, 2 died before we attached sensors to them. In other words. we didn't break them. Also during the week we taught students I2C sensors and one of the students couldn't get his sensors to work. Everything was hooked up correctly, so I took the oscilloscope apart and found that the sync line was not working. The wire failed a simple continuity test. We bought these kits for the students to keep after the two weeks of the course, but as many of them failed the test I suspect others did as well. I replaced them all with the ones I bought from Micro Center and I had to cover the cost. Last year I used PI from CanaKits for a class and we had no problems. Everything worked great. After this disaster, I don't think I'll be buying from CanaKit or Revain again. Next year I will be buying direct from the Raspberry Pi and buying the wires and LEDs myself.
