It works like a charm! We first bought one to install on the basement door in the kitchen so our newly adopted 6 month old pup wouldn't find the dog's gold mine in the basement (cat tray). We adjusted the fit so our 15lb Maine Coon had enough room to walk through comfortably but still prevented the pup from coming in full height. A sturdy doorstop that attaches to the door frame prevents the door from closing completely with hands, head or paws and also ensures that the cat does not get stuck in the basement or cannot enter the basement to do its business. I ordered this at the end of January 2018 and am only now writing a review after 6 months. It works very well for the purpose we need it for and I haven't had any problems with the 3M back peeling off even if we sometimes forget it's locked and try to open the door. We liked it so much that we bought a second one for a vacant bedroom where the cat likes to spend time, especially in the initial stages of dating cats and dogs. This gave her a comfortable spot where the dog couldn't get in. It's better than cutting a hole in your door and teaching the cat to use the cat door. Our cat especially likes to hang out by the cellar door in the kitchen stairwell, waiting for the dog to come over so she can jump at him like a jack-in-the-box. We like to call it their death hole :) TLDR Version: Buy this product instead of cutting a hole in your door if using it for cats, or buy this product if you want to prevent small children from going there, where not to go . You will not be disappointed.
