GOOD LITTLE DEVICE! DO THE JOB!

GOOD LITTLE DEVICE! DO THE JOB! For this review, please keep in mind that I am not an expert on audio or video signals! I personally don't see any difference between HD, Hi-Def, etc. I can see big differences in picture and sound quality if those differences are big enough, but that's about the limit of my "expertise". So let's get to the actual review! I've tried different products over the years and have had very little success and many disappointments. To name a few, I've tried Dazzle and two different Roxio devices. Both gave me the same frustration...they worked for a minute or two, but then I started getting a lot of noise and frames would stutter and drop out! Also, after the "write" was complete, my computer stalled for a while while the transfer transformation was "saved". Sometimes it even crashed on my computer and I had to restart it. At this point I lost a 1.5 hour movie I was trying to convert and save. Finally, these two programs wouldn't let me save as mp4 directly. I would have to save it as a file type and then convert it later. (or at least I didn't know how to save it directly as an mp4 file from those other products. My current project is to convert about 30 old Hi-8 Family Birthday/Merry Christmas cassettes to digital format, to keep them safe and review later .Right now I've completed about 15 of them with no issues since I received this converter. It didn't disappoint and works as expected. There were a few glitches and some pros and cons but overall it is worth the money i will explain 1) Make sure you have the required cables to connect your video source to this converter. It comes with RCA cables, but in my case I'm using my old camcorder as a source to play Hi-8 tapes. My camcorder only has 2 types of outputs...one is a 3.5mm audio/video connector and the other is an "S-Video slot". Just a note for those who may not know, an S-Video cable only carries video, it does not carry audio. (I didn't know this until I read someone's review  ) 2) The picture seemed to get a little better when using an SD card for recording instead of a USB stick. However, I then transferred it to a USB stick to save for later. I would recommend buying 2 SD cards. So while you're recording to one card, you can insert another card into your computer to work on the file. 3) The device itself is nice and compact. It's about the size of a "big" cell phone. It also seems strong 4) The computer will not connect to this device. Since you are recording directly on the device itself5), it saves the recording in "real time" as an MP4 file. So it doesn't need to take another 1.5 hours to convert or save after you've just played the entire tape in the device. After clicking "Stop" your file is ready! **important NOTE. I've read reviews where people got error messages about "corrupt file" after trying to write/convert. After doing some experiments, I found that every time you click stop on the source device while still trying to write to that device, you get a corrupted file. It's like the signal loss leads to a file error. 6) It's very easy to use, right out of the box. Which is good, because the directions seem to be missing. 7) Other browsers have complained that the "auto-stop" feature causes "dead space" which then corrupts the file. In my version of the device I was able to disable this "auto stop" feature so I didn't have this problem. can't continue recording. I will say that this was a problem at first until I took a closer look. Normally, when you try to insert an SD card, you press it until your fingertip touches the computer, etc. At this point, the SD card usually snaps into place. However, with this device, the card is actually "inside" the device after it is snapped into place. So I have to use my fingernail to put it in and take it out. It's a bit annoying, but once I figure it out, no problem. I assume this is for card security? 9) Other reviewers have stated that they receive "corrupt file" error messages after conversion. As I mentioned above, it is IMPORTANT to stop recording BEFORE you press the stop button on the source device. The converter itself will detect the input video signal and won't let you record until it does. So my guess is that when it no longer recognizes that signal it stops writing but doesn't end the file properly. 10) Same goes for starting recording...the device won't let you start recording until it accepts video inputs from a camcorder etc. It wasn't a huge problem, but I sometimes missed a second or two of my original tape due to this lag in recording. 11) As for the "quality" of the recording. I really couldn't tell any difference. Again, I don't have a trained eye... I'll say that. Remember, you're recording to old tape (aka non-digital)...it's not very high quality to begin with. I couldn't figure out how to do it. However, it seems that it doesn't really need to be updated. I can't remember where I saw this, but I saw somewhere that if you ordered your device after a certain date, the device is already up to date. I know this was quite a long review, but I hope it helps Yin make a well-informed decision. Happy conversion 
