The shape keeps the elastic loop taut on the top of the hat preventing it from popping out and the pom pom is easy to remove on wash day. In the first photo the hat is outside with pom poms, in the second - inside - you can see a white rubber loop around the middle of the butterfly and around the poor kitty's neck.
