This valve blocks flow when the coil is de-energized. The flow turns on when the coil is energized. This valve works well when you don't need to power the coil for a long period of time. I needed a valve that would stay open except for emergencies. That means the coil stays on for a very, very long time. The valve gets very hot when operated with 12 V DC for a long time. I did some testing and found that the valve I received works reliably at 5.5VDC. With prolonged operation at this voltage, the coil heats up slightly. I found that I could use a 12V DC power supply if I put a 10W 32 ohm resistor in series with the valve coil. The 10W power rating is conservative as the actual power dissipation is just under 2W. Better to play it safe. Your particular valve may work the same as the valve I tested. You may need to experiment with your specific valve.
