Looks great and conceptual. However, with regular use I think it's just cold sweat and dirt on the metal contacts. However, I use my watch all the time. And never take it off except to charge. Water from the shower with soapy dirt gets in. I take this on long dusty hikes with excessive sweat as well as on the sandy ocean. I work in the yard and dig up the earth. I prefer to just clean the entire clock rather than using those plastic covers to hide the dirt. However, I think I'm pretty rough with my watch. But this watch is made like an iron truck. Anyway, I've never had any problems with the connections. I'm not sure why they should be protected.
