This book truly is the bible of sewing. This is a must have for any sewing library - beginner, intermediate and advanced. On around 450 pages there is little that is not dealt with. The best thing is that it is dedicated to fashion sewing. There are no pillows and towels here! This book takes fashion seriously. The first chapter is all about fashion, explaining things like color, prints, texture, proportion and balance, body profile, etc. I've never seen this all be a general sewing book before. With the basics of construction (tarts, pleats, pintucks, etc.) and manufacturing techniques (binding, collar, cuffs, pockets, etc.), the book starts to get really good. This information is very similar to what you can find in The New Complete Sewing Guide: Step-by-Step Instructions for Making Clothes and Home Decor. New version. Best section for pressing. Everyone explains to beginners the importance of ironing, but there are few sources that tell you how to do it right. This book is one of them - eight pages! Chapter 8 - Advanced Pattern Changes. You won't find that in any other sewing book. These 30 pages are packed. They are divided into "dresses, skirts, bodices", "trousers" and "sewing fit". It won't replace any special customization, but it's a good start. "Substances Requiring Special Treatment" is a wonderful chapter. It covers leather, suede, synthetic suede and fur in addition to the things you would expect like knitwear, fabrics etc. Plaids are covered elsewhere in this book. The tailoring chapter is very detailed. It's almost 30 pages. It covers the skirt, jacket, lining and lining. I love that the book explains what couture is. It also has Shapers and Best Mounts sections which I really like. Overall, though, I think The Thread Sewing Guide: A Complete Guide from America's Best-Loved Sewing Magazine gives you more information on how to sew haute couture (among general sewing books). An added bonus in the book is the 'Fashion Vocabulary'. This is a glossary of fashion terms with illustrations of different types of collars, dresses, jackets, necklines, trousers, skirts and sleeves. The new complete sewing guide: one step -by- Step Technique for Making Clothes and Accessories An updated edition with brand new designs and simple patterns (Reader's Digest) takes a much simpler approach This book will grow with your skill.
