Great inexpensive cover that takes a bit of work to install

I installed this on my 2010 Toyota Highlander after one of my kids in shoes moved from the back seat to the front seat which caused a tear in the armrest, which kept getting worse. I bought this cover after receiving several offers from a few local upholsterers for $75-$125. I thought it might be worth a try. Overall quality of the cover: Super! And better than the vinyl sleeve my Highlander came with. Installation steps (see photo) if it can help someone else. I think this process might be a bit easier with two people, but it's doable by yourself.1. Remove the quick release that locks the armrest in place when you lower it to "lock" by loosening the two screws that hold it in place.2. Removal from Vehicle: Four small black screws hold the cover in place when you open the armrest. Remove them carefully. Then, using a butter knife or large flat head, slowly separate the cover from the armrest where it is held in place by a series of clips on the inside perimeter of the armrest. You will hear a soft click when disconnecting. You may have to insert your finger (or another butter knife or screwdriver) in some places to keep it from snapping. 3. Once the cover is removed, unscrew the four silver screws that attach the armrest to the two levers on the center console 4. Once the armrest is off, use a medium flathead screwdriver to remove any fasteners holding the vinyl cover in place and hold position. There are a lot of screws and you can easily damage the vinyl cover Bottom plastic, but not a big deal in this case. To make it easier to pull the clips out, I used needle nose pliers to pry the clip out after loosening one end with a screwdriver. Slightly damaged, the new case is thick enough that the damage is not visible. Apply enough force to the staple gun when pressing. Make sure the staples are level and not protruding. I started by making sure the sleeve fits properly first - I found that along the way I had more room to play with the fabric than the other way around. When I was ready to put the cover on, I started by attaching it to one of the short ends with four staples. Although my intuition was to stretch the fabric and attach the staples to the other short end, I didn't. I found that when I tried this there was too much sagging and creases on the top/presentation side. So I started at the side where I placed the four original staples and alternately added a staple on each of the long sides. It is important to insert the clip and then push/pull the skin with your palm from above and then pull with your fingers before inserting the clip from the opposite side. When that was done, I added the staples to the last, short side. After that was done I removed some of the staples that didn't fit flush and stapled them back together and inserted many more staples just to make sure everything was secure. To reinstall the armrest, reverse the first three steps (#3, 2, and then 1). The end product looks great. I am impressed with the product.

  • Excellent overall performance
Cons
  • Good but not great
