Summary: On a recent trip across Europe, a fellow traveler kept drooling on my G3, which I connected to multiple devices, while paying Verizon $10 a day for the not always reliable access to cellular communications when roaming on a phone. Details: It just works. You link your G3 to a GlocalMe account, deposit funds, and use it to buy a data plan valid for the country you're traveling to. Then just boot the device. It finds and connects to your local cellular network and creates a password-protected Wi-Fi hotspot that you can log into from your phone, tablet, laptop and more. G3 is my second GlocalMe; I bought it as part of an upgrade offer to replace the G1S and this model fixes all the major issues with the first gen version. In particular, the battery no longer overheats and its lifespan has doubled, the user interface has been completely redesigned for user comfort and it only swallows your data package (more on this below). G3 connects to 4G networks where available, and GlocalMe offers a wide range of single country and region data packages, which can reduce calling costs by 50% or more compared to the whole world package. In my opinion, owning GlocalMe is now a breeze for those who want to stay connected while traveling abroad at a reasonable price. I've used the G3 in three European countries with no major issues. When you boot in any country for the first time, it will take a few minutes to connect to the local network. subsequent downloads in this country take less than a minute. It is important to understand that the G3 relies on local cellular connections in each country and therefore only offers 4G speeds where supported by the GlocalMe partner network in the country. data usage. Some reviews that mention data usage can be misleading because you don't know how the reviewers are using their data. We kept two phones connected while awake, sometimes adding a tablet, and 1GB of data lasted about a week. But to save data (and money), we've changed phone and tablet settings so they don't automatically update apps or sync email, and we've kept our background apps and automatic notifications to a minimum. Streaming burns a lot of data; we did nothing. And Google Maps is also a data hog, so I closed them when they weren't actively being used. For comparison, a friend whose phone wasn't set up connected to our G3 and skipped 500MB of data in less than a day. How much data you use is largely up to you. A few minor issues, but none worth a star: (1) Twice during our trip the default OSD switched to (apparently native) Chinese for no apparent reason. After the icons (Advanced/Language) I restored it to English. (2) G3 has lost connection to local cellular networks several times, but only informed about it with an on-screen message box. I only noticed a loss of connection when I tried to use a connected device that still showed a Wi-Fi connection and didn't make it. Both times, restarting the G3 quickly restored cellular connectivity. Finally, two improvements that are still needed: (1) You should be able to choose which data package you want to use. Currently, you have to burn data packs in the order you buy them, which can end up wasting a lot of money. If you have a 1GB global data plan (cost: β¬30) and are traveling to Germany for a week, you cannot buy and use the German plan for one country (cost: β¬7) until you use the plan for everything Peace. . It makes no sense. (2) The G3 should notify you (preferably via a phone app) when a data pack is running low, so you can buy a new one without having to regularly check the amount of data left on the screen. The previous model received four stars; It worked but had a few issues and quirks. This one just works and works well.
