Review on 🌊 Essential Salinity Measurement Device for Saltwater Aquariums and Seawater Environments by Dave Hammon

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Accurate and easy to use, but may require calibration

Bought this to use in our pool with a salt water generator. Unfortunately I sent it back as I felt it was inaccurate. I added salt to the pool based on measurements taken at Leslie's Pool Supply. Based on these measurements I added salt to get the desired level of 3500ppm and after that her reading was 3647ppm. Then I bought this tester to keep track of my salt levels and it read 5500ppm salt. To confirm who was right I went to another billiard shop and was told my level was 4500. So I assumed this tester was inaccurate and sent it back. However, I had a nagging thought that pool shops could also be wrong, so I bought a Taylor sodium chloride test kit and it showed 5600! So this tester was the most accurate, and Poolshop tests were extremely inaccurate and caused a huge problem: I now have to drain nearly 20,000 gallons. out of my pool to get to the right level! The lesson here is NOT to trust pool shop measurements and especially salinity! Use this tester instead. The only problem with the tester is that it may need to be calibrated regularly, for which you need to buy special solutions. Misleading that this is not mentioned in the product description. However, I now know it worked out of the box and don't know how often or if it might need to be calibrated at some point. I posted this detailed description to help others with this purchase and to make up for my mistake in returning a device that I said was inaccurate but actually works well! I downgraded the rating to 4 stars only because there was no mention of a possible need for calibration.

Pros
  • Multi-point calibration, one-button automatic calibration; automatic displacement or manual measurement; data lock function; Indicator light with insufficient battery capacity.
Cons
  • Slightly torn
