The Spanish-made Pulltap double-hinged corkscrew has been the inspiration for many counterfeits and copies. All copies are made in China and sold for much less, sometimes side-by-side with the original. All copies follow the original in terms of form and function, but are sometimes quite inferior and poorly processed. However, many people believe that of all the replicas on the market, the TrueTap Two-Hinged Corkscrew is the closest and rival to the real thing. to me. Putting the corkscrews side by side, it becomes clear that the TrueTap is almost 100% a Pulltap clone in every detail. In detail, however, there are some very clear differences. The differences are: Pulltap weighs 69 grams, TrueTap weighs 67 grams. The Pulltap handle is shiny solid color while the TrueTap handle is metallic. The Pulltap grip is slightly wider than the TrueTap grip. The Pulltap corkscrew has a larger diameter than the TrueTap corkscrew. The Pulltap and TrueTap screws are about the same length. The black Pulltap screw appears to be coated with a non-stick coating, the TrueTap screw is painted black, but it is glossy and can only be painted. The foil cutter blade on the Pulltap seems to have a slightly better grip, the foil cutter blade on the TrueTap fits a little looser on the pivot and "wiggles" more. Both the Pulltap and TrueTap have black plastic handle inserts with molded corkscrew notches. Both Pulltap and TrueTap have pretty poor chrome plating, which is unusual given Pulltap's reputation for quality. The chrome plating itself looks fine, but the finish on both is marred by the poor finish of the metal prior to machining, leaving numerous micro-scratches and chrome imperfections. It's minor but noticeable. In terms of quality, no one will accuse Pulltap or TrueTap of being made in France by Laguiole. The only aspect that can really affect the feel of your experience is the finish on the down-facing edges of the hollow bar. act. TrueTap has fairly square edges, as if no extra effort was put into finishing the edges after the handle section was formed. On the pulltap, the edges have a slightly rounded profile, as if this piece had been lightly machined after part of the handle was stamped out. Also, the black plastic insert on the TrueTap grip is set a little further into the hollow grip than on the Pulltap, so the edges of the grip on the TrueTap are more open. With the pulltap, the insert is more flush with the edges and the grip feels like one piece. These two small details affect how the handle feels when you pull the cork out. The more angular and slightly downward sloping edge of the TrueTap grip can bite your fingers a bit. Pulltap is a bit more convenient to use. How do you work? Both models had a tight fit at the handle and hinge; both models pulled plugs with no problems. The double hinge worked well on both. At the end of the day I have to say that I prefer the Pulltap somewhat, as admittedly it's a subjective impression that it has a 'value' feel in the hand. TrueTap has the best color palette and metallic finish, and the functionality is about the same. I can't say who opens 10,000 bottles of wine and lasts a lifetime, and who only opens 7,000 bottles of wine and breaks sooner rather than later. But if the price is similar, you should at least get a real pulltap. If TrueTap is offered at a discount compared to Pulltap, then this is a serious alternative. The pulltap is not as noticeable as the metal TrueTap and has a slightly more comfortable grip and feel. TrueTap looks good and works great. I bought both, of course, and am happy with both purchases.
