I've been using NiMH batteries for a long time, but a lot of my devices aren't happy with the 1.2V output, so I've got the exciting one World explored by rechargeable AA lithium batteries. I bought this Deleepow set (4 AA batteries and charger) and tested it with the Zoom H6 portable recorder. In everyday use they seemed to last a very long time so I did a test yesterday to see how good they really are and understand their limitations. I started by charging the batteries to full capacity and then popping them into Zoom. H6 and started a recording session. For this session I used the XY mic as the only input and turned on the compressor (Comp2 Vocals) and low pass filter. From the timestamps on the file I can see that the battery lasted about 15 hours of continuous recording. If we compare this to an average of 20 hours with typical AA alkaline batteries and assume that AA alkaline batteries have a capacity of around 2500mAh, this means that these batteries can deliver around 1875mAh of power. The batteries are labeled 3400mWh, which is 2267mWh at 1.5 volts, but 1875mah is 2812.5mWh at 1.5 volts, which isn't too bad but is well below the labeled 3400mWh, at least when used at this zoom. H6 Capacity aside, the most important thing to understand about these rechargeable AA lithium batteries is that they will keep going until they just quit. Unlike other chemicals where the output voltage slowly decreases as the battery is discharged, these batteries go from 100 to zero very quickly. The chart in the battery description shows this, but I was surprised because the Zoom H6's battery indicator showed full green bars for up to a few minutes before completely stopping working. The good news is that the included charger actually fully charges the batteries in about 2.5 hours, which is much faster than the computer controlled charger I use for my NiMH batteries. Alone time is a great solution and I will be using the Zoom H6. However, if you must rely on your device's internal battery indicator or need the maximum capacity for a rechargeable AA-size battery, NiMH chemistry may still be your best bet.
