This item is a plastic tubing that is cut along its entire length. The theory is that multiple cables can be combined into a more aesthetically pleasing and compact area. However, it also works decently as an anti-chew device. I bought my cat a drinking fountain and wanted to stop her from chewing the string. So I bought it and used it to cover the cable and add an extra layer of protection. While it's not metal based, which would be necessary if you really needed to discourage a determined animal from chewing on it, notifying me a little in advance if it's chewed on the string will suffice. She never tried so it was ok.
