I looked at various alternatives and for practical reasons none came up when I decided to use pocket screws. I used a lot of glue and after the glue dried I modified my dremel so I could work on the raised dots that stayed to a depth of 1/32 inch. After that I was able to use sandpaper on my multi tool. The attached photo shows what it looks like with an early American stain coat on red oak. I'll probably do my next project with mortise and tenon joints instead of pocket holes which should give a cleaner look but I'm still happy with the result
