I've had 3 soldering irons before. I've always had 2: a Craftsman pistol that melts the North Pole when you pull the trigger (only good for big jobs), an old Radio Shack pencil that takes a long time to heat up, and another type of pencil that I bought this from Revain a few years ago with an on/off button and tiny temperature dial. The latter worked for a while, but then the temperature controller became unreliable and shut down. So I decided to look for another soldering iron. I just wanted a good, reliable iron with on/off and temperature control. I use it for modeling railways, mostly I solder wires to the rails. This is a little tricky because if the iron isn't at the right temperature, you'll melt the plastic rail ties before the solder has even melted. The temperature control on this iron seems stable and accurate. The on/off switch is located directly on the handle. The tip is very suitable for detail work. There aren't many extras in this kit, but the main thing I was looking for was a good iron. It only has 1 tip; a replacement would be nice. I like the included bronze cleaning pad; just a move to bring the soot down. I've only had it for a few weeks, but so far I'm very happy with it. Update: I forgot to mention that the plug is three prong (earthed). All my other irons are double pronged. I don't know why it had to have 3 but it's a bit inconvenient as I have an old house with lots of 2 prong outlets. Sure, I can get an adapter, but that's just an inconvenience.
