If you use a 5 volt supply, the output levels will be close to 5 volts, even because of background noise, and any intended input signal will be clipped. Using 3.3 volts on an Arduino or Pi gives you about 2 volts of ground, which eliminates most clipping. There is a bit of noise at the output so I'll try 2.5 volt VCC. Great find.
