Review on πŸ“ ICY DOCK FatCage MB155SP-B: 5-Bay EZ-Tray 3.5 Inch SATA Hard Drive Hot-Swap Backplane Cage in Triple 5.25 Bay by Carrie Stolhanske

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Works well but is very delicate and difficult to install.

ICYDOCK confidently occupies the market in its niche. Unfortunately, it doesn't have many competitors. While this device performed well for what it was designed for. It was almost impossible to take it out of the case and pull it out. It will certainly not work in every case. Those with inner bulges to friction fit 5.25" rims will not fit. This also applies to the guides for 5.25-inch drives. I used this for a mining rig in an old Antec 300 and had to bend the tabs which wasn't easy as there is no easy access in such a small medium tower. In the end I settled on a large case to put my mining rig on and when I unplugged the cables the SATA connector detached directly from the circuit board on the back of the ICYDOCK. I didn't even pull hard, just by pressing the locking tabs on the SATA connector it broke. Of course, this happened just after my 30-day return window expired, so I'm SOL. If that's something you absolutely need, I'm fine with that. But I think most people would end up being happier buying a better case that can hold more drives than putting something like that into an existing case. But for a budget hack, it will work. Also note that the fan is very noisy even on low speed settings and the drives get very hot (I've used some Toshiba Enterprise 14TB drives). I replaced the included 92mm fan with a more advanced and quieter Noctua fan and was able to keep the noise level down at similar temperatures. However, there simply isn't a good airflow path to cool drives, so keep that in mind.
