Review on πŸ’Ύ Western Digital WD6400BEVT 640GB Scorpio Blue - 2.5" SATA2 5400rpm Notebook Hard Drive by Glenn Rodgers

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Now that I've looked at the reviews this drive has a lot of issues

I bought this because I wanted to upgrade my PS3's 80GB hard drive as it's currently full. After getting it, I decided to pop it into my laptop and swap it out for my three current 2.5 inch hard drives. I cloned my existing 250GB Western Digital Scorpio Black hard drive to it with some issues. Fixed some issues because my Vista partition was cloned incorrectly and the MBR was corrupted as well. After the repair it worked great. Some time. Then I decided to upgrade my other partition, Xubuntu, to 10.10. My computer froze in the middle and the installation failed. The kernel loaded correctly, but now it's loading two copies of things: the 10.4 version and the 10.10 version. The second time it cloned better than the first time without breaking Vista and without breaking Vista. I decided to keep 10.04 running a little longer just in case. Then this happened. It started clicking loudly when installed in my laptop. It still works and web reading is 'ok', but it definitely makes users like me nervous. Usually this tone signals an imminent failure. However, it reports that the hard drive is working fine, although I'm not sure. In both Xubuntu and Vista, it often stops waking from sleep/hibernation. It froze completely and I had to switch off cold. Linux reported that sectors could not be read on resume. The situation got worse. It is no longer recognized on my laptop. At first I thought it was my fault so I removed the drive and reinstalled it. It still didn't work. I tried again and it started. It then hung again after resuming from sleep. Now it gets so bad that the POST is delayed for about 10 seconds and not responding. If it finally sends a POST, it means that the disk is not found. However, when I plug it into an external enclosure of another Western Digital drive, it is recognized. Attempting to boot from this drive while connected as a USB flash drive results in a hang. Put the 250GB hard drive back into the laptop and everything works properly including the resume. Quick tests I ran using Western Digital's own tools claim it's fully working, but I know it's not. It seems to work great as an external drive, but that's not what I bought it for. This drive performed almost as well as my 250GB Scorpio Black. I'm just really glad I haven't reformatted my old hard drive yet, as that hard drive seemed unreliable to begin with. It is currently undergoing extensive testing by Western Digital. I expect it to show bad sectors. According to SMART, this is after a claimed 1.6 days of use. I've never had a hard drive fail so quickly. In fact, I haven't had a hard drive failure in almost 10 years. Ironically, all but one were Western Digital. Based on online reviews after all these issues I'm running into, it seems like a very unreliable drive. Many of the problems are caused by the rapid and frequent slowdown that I attribute to my resume problems. I also bet that's why I don't have any problems using it as an external drive as it doesn't stop when it's busy. There are also many other people reporting that the drive isn't recognized, which mirrors my situation where my laptop doesn't see it. After all these problems, I definitely can't trust any of my files on that drive anymore, so I don't think I can bring myself to save them. . I also don't recommend it for all the issues this drive has. The location is good, but I would prefer a smaller drive and some convenience in storing my data.
