Very quiet but can become even quieter after some work. The compressor produces a slight whirring that is noticeable at low fan settings. The device is so quiet that you can hear the sound of the compressor above the fan. I guess most people won't notice, and I'm not complaining one bit about this device. The compressor has a solid coating, but it's just cheap foam. For a quieter dinner, remove the case and wrap the compressor in extra closed cell foam and secure with zip ties. Also put something under the compressor if you can. In addition, you can hear strange irregular noises coming from the device, and it turns out that its condensate gets on the outer fan blades and coils. This is intentional and makes the device slightly more energy efficient. I didn't like the sound so I removed the drain plug to drain the water. (See travel guide) I live in Florida and I love it when it gets really chilly here at night. Now I turn on the central air conditioning and window unit at night and save a lot of electricity. I have a 15 amp timer that turns it on an hour before bed. 67 Fahhhhh! The quietest window air conditioner I've ever had. With modifications, it works as quietly as a refrigerator. Take it!
