Great filters, definitely worth the money!

I was surprised to see some negative reviews on here so wanted to share my own experience of using them in my Drinkwell 360 fountains (both plastic and stainless steel) over the years Add. First let me say that I came to Revain today to order another filter that I need to have on hand as I had to use my backup filter because it had fallen off. I was disappointed to see it was "unavailable" but that has happened in the past. I hope they come back on sale because in my experience they are worth every penny. You'll save a ton compared to disposable filters, not to mention you'll keep all that junk out of the landfill. For those of you who have trouble with this, here are some tips I've found to make it work better: 1. Purchase good quality aquarium charcoal in bulk. I've had a lot of success with this particular brand of Marineland PA0373 Black Diamond Activated Charcoal, 40 oz, 1134 grams, but I'm sure there are others out there that are just as good. I've learned to stay away from the cheaper ones, which are often too fine to use in a filter.2. Rinse the charcoal well before use. Even if you buy quality charcoal, it still contains charcoal dust. While not harmful, it doesn't make the water look pretty and will foul the pre-filter more quickly, plus I've found it can leave a slimy residue on the bowl if there's a lot of it. I put the required amount of charcoal in a finely perforated tea strainer and then rinse it under water until it runs clear. I've also tried this in the filter itself, but found that the screen is best flush. I have also successfully screened charcoal in large batches and then dried the washed charcoal in a thin layer in the sun before storing it in its original container. It takes longer, but it is ready to use at any time.3. Do not overfill the filter! I found half is better. When I've used more it seems to clog faster, possibly because water can't get through as easily. 4. Be sure to use the foam pre-filter! A lot of people seem to skip them, but they make a huge difference as they filter out food particles, hair, saliva and other nasty things and prevent them from getting further into the unit, including the carbon filter. Using foam pre-filters I can live 10-14 days on a single charge of charcoal (I have three cats), although I typically change the charcoal once a week along with washing dishes and pouring fresh clean water. Without the foam pre-filters, the activated carbon filters would become clogged within a few days. Keep the fountain clean. While an activated carbon filter helps keep the water fresh, it does not replace regular cleaning. Any water, even if it flows through such a filter, will eventually form a biofilm. Changing the water in addition to the carbon in the filter helps, but you really need to clean the fountain and its parts regularly to keep them clean, and the aquarium pump that circulates the water is in good condition. Don't expect to install a charcoal filter and clean your bowls for weeks. I usually can't go more than 10 days before I have to clean the filters and refill them with fresh activated carbon. Your mileage may vary depending on the number and type of pets you have and whether you have more than one bowl of water. I have two 360 stainless steel for my three cats that walk all the time but one of them is older and has kidney failure so he drinks a ton of water every day. As soon as you notice that the water isn't circulating well, check the charcoal as it will likely need to be replaced. Anyway, I haven't had any problems with these filters for many years. When the tubes were plastic they got dirty quicker so I was happy to see the transition to glass. The downside, of course, is that the glass can shatter, but over the years I've only broken two from dropping them. I have found the company to be quite quick to respond to emails. I really hope they are still in business!
