Review on Grandma Lucy's Freeze-Dried Artisan Chicken Dog Food - Grain Free, 3lb Bag by Shannon Saunders

Ideal for those looking for foods low in phosphorus.

My 14 year old Basset Hound was recently diagnosed with Kidney Disease (CKD). The vet "prescribed" a kidney-friendly diet (low in protein and phosphorus) that left Wellington lethargic and very grumpy. Five years ago he underwent major back surgery. Keeping him sufficiently active is key to maintaining the musculature and therefore stability around his spine. But once he started eating RX food, he stayed within 10 feet of the house and slept the other 23 hours of the day. To be honest I thought we were nearing the end. I didn't even know he had CKD until the blood test came and when I tried to fix the kidneys it looked like the vet broke the dog. controversial protein. And given his back problems and the well-known tendency of older people to lose muscle mass, I figured that skipping dietary protein would lead to even more muscle breakdown and thus the back would walk much earlier than the kidneys. In my research I found that Grandma Lucy's Artisan is very low in phosphorus and moderately high in protein. And just looking at the ingredients convinced me. The first three ingredients in RX were corn and gluten. The fourth was by-product flour. Grandma Lucy could be fed to your mother (smiles). And a bag? He went for a walk with us this morning. Play with these toys again. And keeps wagging his tail. If the kidneys go a day or two earlier, it was worth it. Added bonus: RX food was dry. Once restored, GL ensures that the dog gets plenty of water in its food.
