Review on Optimized Royal Canin Dog Food - Dry Formula by Stephanie Burke

Revainrating 3 out of 5

I thought it was ok until today.

update: $300 later on vet bills. Oliver had kind of an allergic reaction to that bag. This was my fourth RC Schnauzer formula bag since November 2018. No problems with the first three. I even added it to my subscription service because my local store doesn't always have it in stock. However, the latest bag, delivered in early April 2019, either has a different recipe or something is wrong with it. From the first feeding my dog ate it reluctantly. He only gets 3/4 cup 2 times a day and barely eats half which is very unusual. He must have one of the special slow down bowls because he usually inhales everything in a matter of seconds. And that was my first red flag. I should have stopped right here, but thinking it was a fluke I fed another day. The same answer. Finished my portion very slowly. Literally left, came back for a few minutes and then left. I'll be damned I didn't throw it out of the bowl. That night he began to act sluggishly. We typically run 7-8 miles a day. I had to carry it home less than 1/2 mile. Later that evening I noticed he was scratching his side. He never does, but it hasn't been an obvious scratch yet. Day 3: He has thrown up, refuses to eat, is very thirsty, won't poop, scratches his side like crazy, won't go out, gets hives and needs a quick call to my vet every night about Benedryl, started licking and biting his paws until the pill worked. He eventually passed out, most likely due to Benedril. I woke him up after cooking a pot of chicken and rice in the slow cooker. Guess what? Swallowed right away. He was hungry, but not for this new bag. So, not sure what happened here, wtf. I'll keep the bag until I'm sure it's ok and I don't need to analyze it. With all these dog food memories and all these sudden changes/reactions, I don't like it. I canceled our subscription and contacted Revain for a full refund. Has anyone had the same or a similar reaction lately? If yes, please comment. It scares me and frankly I'm frustrated because just a visit to the vet would cost over $65 for an exam plus everything he needs. That's a lot of money for just 3-3/4 cups of food for a few days. I'm just glad we caught it before something worse happened. Pay attention.
