I bought a pair of these to introduce my young sons (5 and 7 years old) to the concept of friction fire. I really like that the bow is attached to the spindle so it eliminates the frustration of the spindle flying off the bow like a regular bow drill. I think this is a great learning tool for those unfamiliar with friction fire as it makes the learning process easier, especially for younger users. We had to practice our form and learn the concept, which was the goal. Even if they didn't get their money's worth on the first try, they learned a thing or two and most importantly, they didn't get discouraged and had FUN! We'll continue to refine our techniques with this set until they can mine coal and make fire, and then we'll move on to a regular site-built set. Overall I think it's a great way to teach beginners and also a great way to share and spend time with your kids.
