(dry) wire polishing jobs for jewelry making

I bought this on the advice of a craft book to use 0000 steel wool to polish copper wire before winding. I don't have much experience with steel wool, but I'm happy with it. It makes it very easy to polish my wire, just wrap one of the pads around a piece of wire and run it up and down. multiple times. This action actually straightens the wire a bit, which is an added bonus. It is comfortable to hold (without gloves) and does not crumble over the entire work surface. I intend to use it for a long time before swapping it out, so I'm doing my best to keep it dry. I understand that wet performance may not be the same as dry. So keep that in mind. (Steel can definitely rust, and the fewer fibers, the more surface area relative to the overall volume of the piece. The more surface area, the more likely it will rust.) In any event, my wire looks fine (and no scratches - I use clean copper wire, uncoated) after polishing it, so I'm happy.
