I suggest you pay a little more for one with a lock. The right level of precision for things like cutting tile, flooring, and adjusting basic shapes. This is not for fine woodworking. Could be used on my baseboard at home but since it doesn't have a lock I couldn't use it to take a profile and then take it to the store to buy the same profile. If you only use it at home it's fine, it will keep its shape as long as you move it from the object to be measured to your stuff.
