Review on Kidde P4010ACS-W Wire-Free Interconnect Hardwired Smoke Detector with 10-Year Battery Backup, Voice Alert, and Intelligent Technology by Daryle Grove

Nice little things are easy to use, wiring can be overloaded

Back in 2015 I replaced all smoke detectors and combos with Kidde/Firex models. Smoke only detectors were fine, but combined detectors often caused false alarms. Worse, if one worked I had to walk around the house looking for one of the alarms (we have 11 of them!) with flashing lights to see which one had signaled. After the last false alarm at 3am I decided to replace them all with 4010 series detectors. Best of all, when they all sound, you press the mute button on one and they mute all but the alarm sounder. I also like that the LED ring that indicates power only lights up when there's enough ambient light (it takes about 30 seconds to fade out, then fades when it gets dark). When it's time to change the battery, the detectors will NOT beep when it's dark and you can temporarily turn off the low battery alarm. But with a 10-year battery, it's also time to replace the detector. These detectors differ in shape from older models in that there is a bulge that protrudes into the electrical box - if you have a flat box you may find that this clogs the wires. While you can reuse old cable connectors, the 4010 series has a short cable that comes out the back with a socket that you insert the plug into. It also takes up space in the box. The detectors communicate via Bluetooth and I found the pairing instructions easy to follow. I started with three combo detectors and then added smoke detectors. Build quality appears to be higher than older models and no false positives so far after a month.
