Fixed oil consumption and smoke on start up in '05 Suburban

30 mins I'm not a mechanic and have never done "this" before (or so I thought). I watched a few YouTube videos on this and everything went smoothly. Be sure to pull all the spark plug boots off the top and remove the ignition as a whole, NOT individually like some idiots on YouTube. Be sure to torque the valve cover bolts to 8 ft-lbs per manufacturer's specifications. I bought a snap-action torque wrench from Port Freight. This literally INSTANTLY stopped the white-blue smoke on cold starts and practically stopped the oil consumption. Notice I said oil consumption, not leaks. If you're burning oil due to bad valve seals, gaskets, etc. or a rear main seal, it will stop intake due to a poorly designed internal PCV valve clogging and consuming oil, but you need to look for other problems first. In my case, the car was impeccable beforehand and that stopped the oil consumption. I lost 3 liters in 3 weeks due to heavy towing (higher oil pressure). Haven't refilled the oil since the change. This sells for $149 at all major parts stores. Make sure you order the correct part number for your vehicle and order the driver's side valve cover. I believe they fixed this design at the factory after 2011 or in 2011 models. I have attached two photos. One of the factory valve covers next to the replacement and another photo of the engine with the valve cover removed. I had to put some Miracle Oil directly on the pushrods and rocker arms to quiet the lifters ticking on cold starts. But that's another question.

Pros
  • Direct replacement - this rocker cover fits and functions like the original part
Cons
  • Some faults
