I used this product as the water condenser recirculator in my chemistry set. I didn't want to hook it up to a faucet and pour a bunch of water back down the sink. I put it in a bowl of ice water - the instructions say it must be completely submerged in water - and the output goes to the condenser and the return goes straight back into the bowl. The pump is much faster than I expected and a lot stronger than I expected. I haven't used it for this purpose, but it can clearly be modified to include a built-in water skimmer to create a gentle vacuum that's almost certainly sufficient for vacuum filtration, and which can be of modest use in vacuum distillation. The upside here is that if you mess up this pump with solvent fumes or harsh chemicals, it's pretty cheap to replace. Doing it this way introduces fugitive vapors into your circulating water source. The reason water aspirators are becoming increasingly rare in today's chemistry labs is because you cannot control the potential release of dissolved chemicals that come into contact with water as it flows through the aspirator. This setting allows you to bypass this if needed. In some experiments you can do this on purpose if there is a truly toxic by-product that absolutely cannot be released, but will completely and completely dissolve with simple passive contact with water or some other solvent. It's just an idea and I'm not into it, but obviously this pump is very useful and the price is good for me. I doubt those who use it for aquariums have many complaints. He makes a little noise. I didn't notice it after a while, but obviously it's a machine and it's going to make noise. Even small inappropriate noises annoy me a lot and I really pushed the sound of the engine into the background. Hopefully this gives an idea of the noise level. This is a quality product. I'll be back for another if I break this one.
