The raised plastic part on the back of the pan that was difficult to clean no longer exists, possibly due to published reviews of previous customers of this product. The back wall is now flat and smooth and easy to scoop. That being said, the latches holding the top are still a bit flimsy. They'll probably last a long time, but I wouldn't carry a crate, especially one filled with junk, by the top handle as the stress on the plastic latches could cause them to break. If your cat doesn't feel like minding their own business, the lid can act as a deterrent. I bought the hood shell primarily to keep dirt from getting in on all four sides so now there is only the front and a small cat litter mat solves that problem. Yes, it's easy, but I like it. It saves space and has clean lines (I bought a standard size because my cat is small, but with the flap up, it should be big enough for an 8 lb cat to roll over in).
