I bought this for our 65 lb black Lab who is having trouble getting into our Highlander. After several training attempts, she got used to it and the ladder works well. I lean it against the bumper (it's a good thing the object is plastic and doesn't leave a mark), but I still need to steady it so she doesn't throw it off. This happened during our first two attempts. Love the size and light weight, I just fold it up and stow it in the back. I think if it's wide enough and strong enough for my dog, it will work very well for small pets. But I wouldn't use it for a larger dog.
