Fantastic radio seems to have long range when paired with a Shakespearean antenna (I did a lot of reading and chose an 8ft antenna) . You don't need to buy the most expensive antenna, but you do need to buy antennas that are appropriate for your type of boat. I installed it on an 18ft Lund Alum fishing boat and selected the connector for soldering rather than soldering. At the same time, I'm pretty smart, and soldering is useless to me. I spent just over $200 between the radio and antenna. I fish in the Great Lakes of Michigan so I need range that hand traps can't provide.
