Review on πŸ’Ύ WD My Passport Elite 500 GB USB 2.0: Portable External Hard Drive in Metallic Blue - Efficient Data Storage Solution by Chuck Hernandez

But there are a few things.

After much research, I bought this Western Digital My Passport Elite 320GB external hard drive because I felt it was the best choice in terms of manufacturer's reputation, portability, capacity and price. I was most interested in a product that would allow me to back up important data, and the automatic backup feature was a definite plus. Although I'm currently using Windows XP Home, I've deliberately waited until I see a hard drive that works with Windows 7 in case I upgrade my operating system or buy a new PC any time soon. USB connection, it copies very quickly. The "dock" is also a nice feature as you can leave the dock plugged in but remove the drive from it and take it somewhere else. All you need to use it is a USB cable. However, I encountered a few issues that Western Digital responded to very quickly. First, "WD SmartWare" (software that provides automatic and permanent backups) is not working properly on my computer. It is reported that this is not a permanent problem on all PCs with my operating system, but for some reason mine has it. WD engineers are trying to reproduce the issue to resolve it. However, I can still back up the data manually. And backing up my data manually is the preferred format in my opinion. When I first booted up WD SmartWare, it initially started and I was able to run a scan that backed up my files to the drive. Second, the auto-backup feature organizes saved files into numerous alphanumeric folders. , based on some logic I'm sure, but you can't tell which files are in which folders without opening each folder and examining the files. However, if you manually copy from disk "C" to this external drive, all folders and files will be copied as you organized them. I spoke to Western Digital customer support about this and it seems they have had a lot of feedback on this and may change their future software to better organize the data. , manual backup works fine. And hopefully WD will release a fix soon or I will be able to buy another computer and use the software.
